My current field is Installation, Performance and Sculpture, studying interactions between body, space and materials. Experimenting with the earth/clay and wool, including the use of my body as a component; and the process of ‘making’ as performance (an end in itself), along with the construction of site-specific installations. My studies on the BA Hons ceramics course at West Wales School for Arts have been a journey leading to the evolution of my practice into Fine art.

My research interests concern theories regarding prenatal experiences, reproducing such effects as enclosure, floating, interior/exterior acoustics, the textures of the bodily interior, exploring these within the creative process. My investigations have been informed by the work of Mona Hatoum, Helen Chadwick, Anna Mendieta, Bill Viola and Joseph Beuys.

I suggest prenatal development has an essential influence on life experience, posing the question: what can be remembered from our time in the womb? For example, Kahn, Noise Water Meat, (2001), refers to research indicating that babies can respond to music while in the womb. What elements from the prenatal stage affect postnatal behaviour? I question the popular psychological viewpoint (expressed by Jean Piaget) that we are born as a “blank canvas”, consider theories of Dr. Stanislav Grof concerning the perinatal and transpersonal sphere and issues within medical science giving primacy to genetic and physical development of the foetus, ignoring mental and emotional growth. My research is focus on concepts of the bodily interior as ‘social’ space; metaphorical relationships between body and landscape; birth experience and life journey.

I am combining an artistic and scientific input within my research and involving spectator in my artwork to achieve a best respond. I am fully committed to my subject and strongly believe in the social role of the artist in today’s society.
